Its story
According to its inscription, the Gümrük Hanı was commissioned in 1566–1567 (974 AH) by Behram Paşa, Sanjak Bey of Urfa; it is the building Evliya Çelebi refers to as the 'Yetmiş Hanı' and that is also called the 'Alaca Han' (Motley Han) because of its two-colored stone facade. The two-story han of nahit stone, with its courtyard surrounded by an arcade of 23 pointed arches and a pool in the middle, is today a place where tea and mırra (bitter coffee) are drunk and handicrafts are sold. In the covered and open bazaars surrounding the han, such as the Kazzaz Pazarı (bedesten), Sipahi Pazarı, Bakırcılar (coppersmiths) and Attarlar (spice sellers), isot (Urfa pepper), spices, handwoven textiles and copperware are sold. The bazaar is a few minutes' walk from Balıklıgöl.
