Akalan Castle

An ancient settlement castle on the plateau beside the Karadere in Atakum, surrounded by walls about 1 km long.

Its story
The castle is between the villages of Çatmaoluk and Kulacadağ, on the slope of the plateau beside the Karadere. The area, about 350 meters long and 50–70 meters wide, is surrounded by a one-kilometer wall set on rocky ground; there is a mound in the middle. Terracotta architectural revetment plaques found in the excavation of 1906 are kept at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
