Taraklı Historic Houses and Bazaar
Taraklı, Sakarya
Streets of wooden Ottoman mansions, handicraft shops and a historic bazaar in Taraklı, a member of the Cittaslow network.
Its story
In the Ottoman period, Taraklı was one of the important staging posts on the Istanbul–Baghdad road, and it is believed to take its name from the boxwood combs (tarak) made here. Hundreds of 19th-century wooden houses, with their bay windows and narrow streets, have been preserved in the town; many have been restored and are used as guesthouses and house museums. Taraklı is a member of the Cittaslow (Slow City) network of towns that preserve a slow pace of life and local culture. Craftsmen in the bazaar keep alive the geographically indicated tradition of boxwood spoons and combs. Tasting uğut tatlısı (a wheat-sprout dessert) and other local dishes is an essential part of the visit.
