Its story
The building, popularly known as the Kurşunlu Mosque, was commissioned in 978 AH (1570–1571) by İskender Cafer Paşa according to the inscription above the entrance door, and is counted among the oldest surviving mosques of the city. Ministry of Culture and Tourism sources emphasize that the mosque is an example in Rize of classical Ottoman architecture. The middle of the rectangular-plan mosque, built of rubble stone, is covered with a dome on an octagonal drum resting on squinches, and the sides with a hipped roof; the arched windows in the drum light the interior. The fact that the outside of the dome is covered with lead (kurşun) gave the building its name. The mosque underwent a comprehensive repair in 1908–1909.
