Its story
Gençağa Castle rises on a rock mass of about 60 meters within the boundaries of Karlıtepe, about 7 km from the İkizce district center. It is accepted as having been built in the 13th century by the Hacıemiroğulları Principality; the eastern and southern sides of the rock are surrounded by walls of rubble and cut stone. The castle consists of two sections; the entrance is reached by steps cut into the rock face, and inside there are two wells popularly called the 'Bakır Kuyu' (Copper Well) and 'Kemik Kuyu' (Bone Well). A legend is told that the castle was commissioned by Gençağa, a rich feudal lord, who buried his treasure in the ground while fleeing his enemies; for this reason the castle was damaged for years by treasure hunters. Restoration work was carried out in 2018 at the castle, a first-degree natural and archaeological protected site. From its summit there is a wide view stretching beyond İkizce as far as Ünye and the Black Sea.
