Mustafapaşa (Sinasos)
Ürgüp, Nevşehir
A town formerly called Sinasos, with magnificent 19th-century stone mansions, churches and monasteries, selected by the World Tourism Organization as one of the Best Tourism Villages.
Its story
In the 19th century, under the name Sinasos, Mustafapaşa was one of the richest settlements in Cappadocia. Its Greek Orthodox people, who grew wealthy in İstanbul especially through the caviar and seafood trade, built stone mansions, schools and churches in the town. With the population exchange of 1924 the Greek Orthodox population left and Turks from Macedonia settled in their place. Today the mansions with carved facades, the Church of Saints Constantine and Helena and the monastery valley nearby are the town's main assets. In 2021 Mustafapaşa was selected by the United Nations World Tourism Organization as one of the Best Tourism Villages.
