Its story
Malazgirt Castle is a large defensive structure consisting of two parallel rows of walls surrounding the district center. It is accepted that it took its present form in the Byzantine period, in the 10th century; it is built of hard black stone and Horasan mortar. Also mentioned in Islamic sources, the castle was the scene of many battles in the early Islamic and Byzantine periods, was besieged twice by Tuğrul Bey and was one of Alparslan's targets in the 1071 campaign. The walls were damaged in natural disasters and repaired in various periods, and repairs are partly ongoing. The main bastion and the bastions can easily be seen while walking around the district center; it can be visited together with the nearby Victory Monument.
