Malazgirt 1071 Victory Monument
Malazgirt, Muş
A monument built in memory of the 1071 Malazgirt Victory in a walled area east of the Malazgirt district center; within walking distance of the Malazgirt Museum.
Its story
The monument stands east of the district center, west of the Malazgirt–Ahlat highway, in a walled area, and commemorates the victory won in 1071 by the Seljuk army under Sultan Alparslan against Byzantium. Just to its west is the historic Mengüçgazi Cemetery, protected by a surrounding wall. The nearby Malazgirt Museum, opened in 2021 as a unit of the Muş Museum, tells the story of the battle with a miniature re-creation showing the Seljuk and Byzantine armies; the museum is closed on Mondays. The monument, castle and museum together form the core of a half-day trip to Malazgirt.
