Theangela Ancient City
Bodrum, Muğla
An ancient Carian city near Etrim, whose sturdy walls spread along the mountain ridge.
Its story
Theangela is a Carian city founded in the hills above the present-day village of Etrim, in the east of the Bodrum Peninsula. After Alexander the Great took Caria, it was placed under the administration of Halicarnassus. The city is also mentioned as the birthplace of the 4th-century BC historian Philip. Its thick walls and towers running along the mountain ridge are among the best-preserved ancient defensive structures on the peninsula. The site is reached by footpaths near the start of the Lelegian Way (Leleg Yolu).
