Myndos Gate
Bodrum, Muğla
The western entrance of the walls of ancient Halicarnassus; a monumental gate surviving with its towers and the moat in front of it.
Its story
The Myndos Gate is the entrance in the city wall built by Mausolus that opened onto the road to Myndos in the west. This section, where the walls crossed the plain, was reinforced with towers measuring about 7x8.5 meters. The defensive moat dug in front of the gate can still be traced today. It is reported that the fiercest fighting during Alexander the Great's siege of Halicarnassus in 334 BC took place in this area. The restored tower and wall sections are in an open area reached by a short walk from the town center.
