Idyma Ancient City
Ula, Muğla
A Carian city at the eastern end of the Gulf of Gökova, with temple-fronted tombs carved into the cliff above the village of Gökova.
Its story
Idyma is a Carian coastal city founded at the head of the Gulf of Gökova, on a hill overlooking the plain around the Kadın Azmağı. It is known that Persian armies took the area in 546 BC, but local traditions continued. The city's most striking remains are tombs with Ionic temple facades carved into the rock face. A short but steep walk leads up to the walls on the acropolis hill, with views over the gulf.
