Firuz Bey Mosque
Milas, Muğla
An early Ottoman mosque dated 1394, clad in white and colored marble reused from ancient buildings.
Its story
The Firuz Bey Mosque was commissioned in 1394 by Firuz Bey, the Ottoman governor of the Menteşe Sanjak. Because it was built during the transition period between the Menteşe Beylik and the Ottomans, traces of both traditions can be seen in its architecture. Some of the white and colored marble on its facades was reused from the buildings of ancient Mylasa. Because of its marble cladding, it is also popularly known as the Gök Cami (Sky Mosque).
