Its story
The two-story building housing the museum was built in 1889 as cavalry barracks by Hacı Hasan Paşa, governor of Diyarbakır in the reign of Abdülhamid II; its architect was Sarkis Elyas Lole. Used in later periods as a military recruitment office, a gendarmerie station and a tax office, the building was restored and converted into a museum. The exhibition on the upper floor tells the city's history through re-creations and photographs, with gravestones of different faiths, products of crafts such as jewelry-making, coppersmithing, weaving, soap-making and stone carving, local costumes and household items. The Dilek Sabancı Art Gallery on the ground floor hosts temporary contemporary art and photography exhibitions.
