Mardin Museum
Artuklu, Mardin
A museum displaying the region's archaeological and ethnographic works in the former Syriac Catholic Patriarchate building dated 1895.
Its story
The museum building was commissioned in 1895 by Ignatios Behnam Banni, Patriarch of Antioch, as the Syriac Catholic Patriarchate. Used for different purposes for many years, the building was purchased and restored by the ministry, and opened as a museum in 2000 with the transfer of the works from the Zinciriye Madrasa. The three-story, U-plan building, set in terraces on sloping ground, bears the features of the traditional Mardin house. The collection includes tablets, seals, figurines, coins and jewelry from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman period; the ethnography section displays silverwork, clothing and everyday items characteristic of the region. Right next door is the Syriac Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary, dated 1860; in the courtyard to the south there is an archaeopark and an open-air event area.
