Ters Tepe Mound (Ters Tepe Höyüğü)
Selendi, Manisa
A settlement 1.5 km west-southwest of Selendi spanning the Chalcolithic to the Roman period; at 18 hectares, the largest mound in Manisa.
Its story
Ters Tepe Mound was introduced to the scientific world in 2008 through the studies of Prof. Dr. Engin Akdeniz. Covering two hills and exceeding 600×300 meters, the mound is, with its area of 18 hectares, the largest of the 92 mounds in Manisa. Pottery fragments from the Chalcolithic, Early and Middle Bronze Age, and Hellenistic and Roman periods have been found on the surface, showing that the settlement goes back to around 5500 BC. It is thought that the mound may have been the center of one of the kingdoms of the Arzawa Federation, most probably the Land of the Seha River mentioned in Hittite texts. The site, not yet excavated, was declared a 1st-degree archaeological protected site in 2014.
