Philadelphia (Alaşehir)
Alaşehir, Manisa
An ancient city at the foot of the Bozdağlar on the trade route between Sardis and Kolossai; today beneath Alaşehir.
Its story
Philadelphia was founded at the foot of the Tmolos (Bozdağlar) range, south of the Kogamis (Alaşehir Çayı) river. As one of the cities of the volcanic Katakekaumene region, it played the role of a crossroads of trade and culture. One of the seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation was also here. In Alaşehir, which grew up on top of the ancient city, wall remains and the Church of St. John are the visible traces of this past.
