History and archaeology / Han and caravanserai
Zıvarık Hanı
Altınekin, Konya
A restored caravanserai with a covered plan in central Altınekin, notable for the spolia stones in its portal.
Its story
The Zıvarık (Zivarek) Hanı is in the center of Altınekin, where the old Konya–Ankara and Aksaray caravan roads crossed, and is the most important witness to the district having been a trading stop in the Seljuk–Principalities period. The Kültür Envanteri dates the building to the 14th-century Karamanid period; built without a courtyard and fully covered, the han is about 725 m² in size. The spolia stones with geometric patterns used in the portal point to material brought from the nearby ancient settlement of Perta. The han also appears in the German art historian Kurt Erdmann's inventory of Anatolian caravanserais and was photographed in 1884 by John Henry Haynes. It has recently been restored.
