Aya Elenia Church
Selçuklu, Konya
The symbol of Sille; the Church of the Archangel Michael, attributed by tradition to Empress Helena, whose present structure bears 19th-century repairs.
Its story
The church is said to have been commissioned by Helena, mother of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine, during her journey to Jerusalem in 327; for this reason it is called Aya Elenia. Its actual name is the Church of the Archangel Michael. Inside there is a repair inscription dated 1833, written in Turkish with Greek letters; this Karamanlidika inscription is concrete evidence of Sille's multicultural past. The wooden iconostasis, the dome and the wall paintings have recently been restored. Having lost its congregation after the 1923 population exchange, the building is visited today as a museum.
