Village and rural life
Sille
Selçuklu, Konya
A valley settlement thousands of years old, 8 km northwest of Konya, with rock-cut chapels, stone houses and the Aya Elenia Church.
Its story
Traces of settlement in Sille go back to the Neolithic Age; in the Roman and Byzantine periods it became an important religious center because of its location on the road to Jerusalem. The nearby Ak Manastır (White Monastery) is said to have been a place also visited by Mevlevi dervishes. Until the population exchange of 1923, Turkish-speaking Orthodox Greeks and Muslims lived together here for centuries. The rock-cut spaces on the slopes of the valley, the stone bridge, the hamam, the Çay Mosque and the restored mansions can be explored on foot today. The Sille Dam and the countryside around it are popular for weekend getaways.
