Şerafettin Mosque
Karatay, Konya
A 17th-century Ottoman mosque at the entrance to the Bedesten bazaar, with its large dome resting on ten massive piers and its painted decoration.
Its story
The mosque's foundation is traced back to Şeyh Şerafeddin in the 12th century; it was repaired in 1444 by the Karamanid İbrahim Bey II. The building, which had fallen into ruin, was demolished in 1636 by Mehmed Çavuşoğlu Memi Bey and rebuilt in its present form. The cut-stone body is covered with a large dome supported by a semi-dome to the south; the interior is decorated with calligraphy and painted (kalem işi) ornamentation. The Şeyh Şerafeddin Tomb, south of the building, was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century and rebuilt in 2010.
