Tomb and Mosque of Shams-i Tabrizi (Şems-i Tebrizi)
Karatay, Konya
A shrine-tomb named after Shams-i Tabrizi, Rumi's spiritual companion, and the adjoining historic mosque.
Its story
No inscription or endowment deed showing who commissioned the building or when it was built has survived; the zaviye first appears in the Ottoman tax register dated 1476. In 1509 it was enlarged by İshak Bey, new rooms were added, and it was supported with endowments. It consists of a domed tomb of about 7×7 meters and a worship space of 12×17 meters, and was considered one of the most important zaviyes attached to the Mevlânâ lodge. The repairs of 1955 and 1967 changed the building considerably, and the old graveyard has turned into a park. It is a stop on the commemoration walks during the Şeb-i Arûs ceremonies.
