Kubadabad Palace
Beyşehir, Konya
The summer palace of Alâeddin Keykubad I on the southwest shore of Lake Beyşehir; the only surviving palace remains of the Anatolian Seljuks.
Its story
The palace was built between 1226 and 1236 by order of Alâeddin Keykubad I under the supervision of Sadeddin Köpek; the Seljuk historian Ibn Bibi describes its construction and the days the sultan spent here in his work. At the foot of the Anamas mountains, on a rocky peninsula extending into the lake, it is a complex consisting of a large and a small palace, a hamam, a shipyard and auxiliary buildings. In excavations ongoing since 1980, star- and cross-shaped tiles with human, animal and mythological figures were found; a large part of them are displayed at the Karatay Madrasa Tile Works Museum in Konya. On Kız Kalesi Island opposite there are also remains of Seljuk-period buildings.
