Sultan Selim Mosque and Complex
Karapınar, Konya
The surviving twin-minaret mosque of the complex commissioned by Prince Selim during his governorship of Konya and completed in 1563.
Its story
The complex began to be built after 1560 in the name of Prince Selim, Governor of Konya, later Selim II, and was completed in 1563. Although it is mentioned in Sinan's lists of works, archival documents point to the architect Cemâleddin of Aleppo; the question of the architect is debated. It was a large staging-post complex consisting of a mosque, two caravanserais, a hamam, an imaret, a tabhane, an arasta, a school, a timekeeper's house (muvakkithane) and a fountain. Today the best-preserved part is the single-domed mosque with twin minarets; the hamam is abandoned, the school was rebuilt on its old foundations, and the other sections are ruined or have disappeared.
