Alâeddin Mosque and Alâeddin Hill
Selçuklu, Konya
Konya's largest and oldest mosque, on Alâeddin Hill in the middle of the city, containing the kümbet of the Seljuk sultans.
Its story
The mosque, whose construction began in the time of Mesud I, completed its first phase when Kılıçarslan II added a kümbet to the courtyard; the enlargement work of İzzeddin Keykâvus I was finished in 1220–1221, in the first years of the reign of Alâeddin Keykubad I. With its prayer hall extending east–west with numerous spolia columns and its ebony minbar, it is one of the monumental examples of Seljuk architecture. The kümbet in the courtyard contains the sarcophagi of most of the Seljuk sultans. The mound on which the mosque stands bears Konya's oldest traces of settlement; at the foot of the hill, the remains of the Kılıçarslan II Pavilion are preserved. The park around it is one of the city center's most popular strolling areas.
