Dilovası Mimar Sinan Bridge (Dilderesi Bridge)
Dilovası, Kocaeli
A three-arched stone bridge over the Dilderesi at Diliskelesi, on the Istanbul–Baghdad road, dated to the 16th century and attributed to Mimar Sinan.
Its story
The bridge is over the Dilderesi at the Diliskelesi locality of Dilovası and is part of the Istanbul–Baghdad road, the main Ottoman route to the east. As it has no inscription, its construction date is uncertain; because of its architectural features it is dated to the 16th century and regarded as the work of Mimar Sinan. Popularly linked to the Baghdad campaigns of Süleyman's reign, it is also known as the Kanuni Bridge. The three-arched bridge is about 54 meters long and 6.5 meters wide. After a restoration carried out by hand in 2021 by the General Directorate of Highways and Dilovası Municipality, it was closed to vehicle traffic and reserved for pedestrians.
