Darıca Castle
Darıca, Kocaeli
The remains of a castle in Darıca, known in the Byzantine period as Tararion and Daritzion, which passed to the Ottomans after the 1329 Battle of Pelekanon.
Its story
The castle was used in the Byzantine period to protect the town and is mentioned in sources first as Tararion, then as Daritzion. After the Battle of Pelekanon in 1329 it passed to the Ottomans and took the name Darıca Castle. During the Interregnum following the Battle of Ankara, in 1403, it was briefly returned to Byzantium by Süleyman Çelebi, together with Eskihisar and Hereke. Today only a single tower of the castle remains standing. The remains, together with the Yelkenkaya Lighthouse built in 1896, are counted among the district's historic symbols.
