Akçakoca Bey Mausoleum
Kandıra, Kocaeli
The mausoleum of Akçakoca Bey, one of Osman Gazi's commanders, who is held to have given his name to Kocaeli.
Its story
Akçakoca Bey was one of the commanders of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi in the founding period of the Ottoman Beylik and played an important role in the conquest of the İzmit area. It is widely accepted that the name 'Kocaeli' comes from 'Koca ili', meaning the lands he conquered. The mausoleum in Kandıra was arranged to keep his memory alive. Set in a quiet rural setting, the site is a meaningful stop for those interested in the history of the founding period. It is a short drive from central Kandıra.
