Kayseri Covered Bazaar, Bedesten and Vezir Hanı
Melikgazi, Kayseri
One of Türkiye's largest covered bazaars, consisting of the Bedesten dated 1497, the Vezir Hanı dated 1727 and the Covered Bazaar rebuilt in the 19th century.
Its story
Kayseri's historic bazaar area consists of interconnected buildings between the Ulu Mosque and the castle. Its core is the Bedesten, commissioned in 1497 by Mustafa Bey, the Sanjak Bey of Kayseri. The two-story Vezir Hanı beside it was commissioned in 1727 by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa. The Covered Bazaar was rebuilt in the 19th century, after the fires of 1849 and 1870, as a large cut-stone building with four gates. Keeping its liveliness today with jewelers, carpet sellers, pastırma makers and traditional tradespeople, the bazaar is the place that best reflects Kayseri's trading tradition.
