Gevher Nesibe Şifahiyesi (Museum of Seljuk Civilization)
Kocasinan, Kayseri
Founded in 1206 by the will of Gevher Nesibe Sultan, one of Anatolia's first medical schools and hospitals; today the Museum of Seljuk Civilization.
Its story
The building, also known as the Çifte Medrese (Twin Madrasa), was commissioned in 1206 by Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev I in accordance with the will of his sister Gevher Nesibe Sultan, daughter of the Seljuk ruler Kılıçarslan II. It consists of two adjoining sections, one a hospital (şifahane) and the other a medical madrasa; it is considered one of the earliest institutions where treatment and education were carried out together. According to legend, Gevher Nesibe fell ill when the commander she loved died in battle and asked for a hospital to be built where people could be treated free of charge. The restored building today serves as the Museum of Seljuk Civilization and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2014.
