Ermenek Ulu Mosque (Grand Mosque)
Ermenek, Karaman
A historic mosque commissioned in 1302 by the Karamanid Mahmud Bey according to its inscription, overlooking the town from the foot of Ermenek Castle.
Its story
The inscription above the door opening from the narthex into the prayer hall records that the mosque was commissioned in 1302–1303 by Mahmud Bey, one of the Karamanid beys; the narthex was added in 1543. The original Karamanid-period wooden door leaves bearing an inscription in thuluth script were later removed. Repaired in 1713 and 1906, the building looks down on Ermenek's tile-roofed houses from the foot of the rocky outcrop where the castle stands.
