Teos Ancient City
Seferihisar, İzmir
An Ionian port city near Sığacık with a Temple of Dionysus, a theater and a council house.
Its story
Teos was one of the twelve Ionian cities and held an important place in trade thanks to its two harbors. The temple dedicated to the city's chief god, Dionysus, is attributed to the Hellenistic architect Hermogenes and is one of the largest temples of Dionysus in the ancient world. The lyric poet Anacreon was from Teos; the city also became the center of the guild of Dionysian artists. The remains of the theater, bouleuterion and agora among the olive groves are being brought to light through excavation and restoration.
