Church of St. Polycarp
Konak, İzmir
The city's oldest Catholic church, dedicated to Polycarp, İzmir's first bishop.
Its story
The church takes its name from Polycarp, disciple of the Apostle John and bishop of İzmir (Smyrna), who was martyred in the 2nd century AD. The building was built in the 17th century on France's initiative, with permission obtained from the Ottoman administration, and was enlarged in the 19th century. The wall paintings inside depict scenes from Polycarp's life. It is on Gazi Kadınlar Sokağı, close to Kültürpark.
