Basilica of St. John
Selçuk, İzmir
The remains of a monumental basilica built under Emperor Justinian over the site believed to be the tomb of the Apostle John.
Its story
The basilica on the slope of Ayasuluk Hill was built in the 6th century, in the time of Justinian and Theodora, as a cross-plan, multi-domed building. One of the largest churches of its time, it was built over the section believed to be the tomb of John. Destroyed by earthquakes and damage in later centuries, the basilica has had its columns and walls partly re-erected. From its terraces there is a wide view of the Artemision, the İsa Bey Mosque and the Selçuk plain.
