Sığacık Castle and Kaleiçi
Seferihisar, İzmir
A castle repaired with stones from Teos in the 16th century, home to a lived-in neighborhood and a producers' market held on Sundays.
Its story
The castle is estimated to have been built in the Seljuk period; its main major repair was carried out during Süleyman the Magnificent's preparations for the Rhodes campaign, using stones brought from the ruins of Teos. The Kaleiçi neighborhood, still inhabited within the walls, stands out with its restored stone houses and narrow streets. Seferihisar received the title of Türkiye's first slow city (Cittaslow). The market held every Sunday, where only products made in the district are sold, is one of the region's best-known producers' markets.
