Metropolis Ancient City
Torbalı, İzmir
The 'city of the Mother Goddess'; a settlement going back to the Neolithic, with its theater, mosaic hall and baths.
Its story
Metropolis is on a hill in the Yeniköy neighborhood of Torbalı, settled from the Neolithic period onward. In the Late Bronze Age it is thought to have been mentioned in Hittite sources as Puranda. Excavations have uncovered a Hellenistic theater, a council house, the acropolis, a mosaic hall and Roman baths. The city's name means 'city of the Mother Goddess' and points to the importance of the cult of Cybele in the region.
