House of the Virgin Mary
Selçuk, İzmir
A small stone chapel on the wooded slope of Bülbül Dağı, visited by Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike.
Its story
According to tradition, the Virgin Mary came to Ephesus with the Apostle John and spent the last years of her life here. In the 19th century, researchers working from the accounts of a German nun found the present chapel on this slope. The lower parts of the building are thought to date from the Byzantine period. Beside the chapel are a wishing wall and spring water; several popes have visited. A mass held every year on August 15 draws large numbers of people.
