Limantepe and Urla Underwater Archaeopark
Urla, İzmir
A Bronze Age settlement home to one of the oldest known harbors in the Aegean, where Türkiye's first underwater excavations were carried out.
Its story
Limantepe is a mound on the seashore in the Urla İskele neighborhood, with traces of settlement continuing throughout the Bronze Age. Identified by Ekrem Akurgal in 1950, the site has been excavated by an international team since 1979. The breakwater remains on the shore point to one of the oldest harbors in the Aegean. The site of the underwater excavations is also associated with Türkiye's first underwater museum project.
