Its story
Klazomenai is an Ionian city founded around Urla İskele and is known as the hometown of the philosopher Anaxagoras. During the Persian threat, part of the population moved to Karantina Island opposite. The city's most interesting section is the press, dating to the 6th century BC and reconstructed as one of the oldest known olive oil production facilities in Anatolia. Klazomenai's painted terracotta sarcophagi are displayed today in the İzmir Archaeology Museum.
