Kızıl Avlu (Red Basilica, Temple of Serapis)
Bergama, İzmir
A giant Roman temple dedicated to Egyptian gods, rising in central Bergama with its red brick walls.
Its story
The Kızıl Avlu (Red Courtyard) is a large temple complex built in the 2nd century AD under Hadrian for gods of Egyptian origin. It takes its name from the red color of its brick walls. The Bergama Çayı flows beneath the courtyard through the Bodrum Bridge, one of the widest tunnel-bridge structures of antiquity. One of the round side towers of the building, converted into a basilica in the Byzantine period, is used today as a mosque. Being within the town, it is visited together with Bergama's old bazaar fabric.
