First Bullet Monument (Hasan Tahsin)
Konak, İzmir
A monument in Konak to the journalist Hasan Tahsin, who fired the first bullet at the occupying forces on May 15, 1919.
Its story
On May 15, 1919, the day İzmir was occupied, the journalist Hasan Tahsin opened fire on Greek soldiers advancing in Konak and lost his life on the same spot. Built through a campaign launched in 1972 with contributions from the İzmir Journalists' Association and the people of İzmir, the monument was unveiled by President Fahri Korutürk on May 15, 1974. The statue was designed by Turgut Pura and the pedestal by the architect Harbi Hotan. The figure on the granite pedestal is depicted with a flag in one hand and a gun in the other; the reliefs on the sides tell of the people's National Struggle. The monument was moved to its present location during the 2003 redevelopment of Konak Square, and a commemoration ceremony is held in front of it every May 15.
