Old Smyrna (Tepekule)
Bayraklı, İzmir
İzmir's first urban core; remains of an Athena temple and walls from the period when Homer is thought to have lived.
Its story
Old Smyrna was founded at the foot of Yamanlar Dağı, on a small promontory that at the time extended into the sea. Thanks to its natural harbor it became one of the most important settlements on the gulf. Excavations have found a 7th-century BC Temple of Athena, houses on a regular street plan and thick walls. Diminished after an attack by the Lydians, the city moved to the foot of Kadifekale in the Hellenistic period.
