Çandarlı Castle
Dikili, İzmir
A restored quadrangular castle on the shore of the Çandarlı peninsula, bearing Genoese and Ottoman traces.
Its story
Although the castle's construction date is not known exactly, it is believed to have been repaired by the Genoese in the 14th century. In the 15th century it was rebuilt on the orders of Çandarlı Halil Paşa. A restoration between 2009–2014 consolidated the walls and towers. Located on the peninsula where the ancient city of Pitane stood, the castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013. It can be visited together with the Blue Flag beach in front of it.
