Birgi Ulu Mosque (Aydınoğlu Mehmet Bey Mosque)
Ödemiş, İzmir
Completed in 1312, a masterpiece of the beylik period with a walnut kündekari minbar and tiled mihrab.
Its story
The mosque was completed in 1312 by Mehmet Bey, founder of the Aydınoğulları Beylik. Columns reused from ancient buildings, the colorful tile-clad mihrab and the walnut minbar made in the kündekari (interlocking woodwork) technique are the building's most valuable elements. The glazed brick decoration on the minaret shaft is also striking. The tomb of Aydınoğlu Mehmet Bey is in its courtyard.
