Bergama Asklepion
Bergama, İzmir
One of the most famous healing centers of the ancient world, dedicated to Asclepius, god of health; where the physician Galen also worked.
Its story
The Asklepion was a healing and pilgrimage center linked to the city by a sacred way. Patients sought to recover through sacred spring water, mud baths, music and dream interpretation. In the Roman period, the physician Galen, trained at this center, became one of the most influential figures in the history of medicine. The colonnaded sacred way, small theater, library and underground tunnel can be visited. The site is part of the Pergamon UNESCO World Heritage site.
