Its story
After the death of Alexander the Great, Pergamon became the capital of a powerful kingdom under the Attalid dynasty. On the acropolis are the palaces, the famous library, the sanctuary of Athena and the foundation of the Altar of Zeus; the altar's reliefs are in Berlin today. The theater, holding about 10,000 people, is one of the steepest theaters of the ancient world. The white marble columns of the Temple of Trajan, built in the Roman period, are the city's symbol. Bergama was added to the UNESCO list in 2014 as a multilayered cultural landscape.
