İzmir Atatürk Monument (Cumhuriyet Meydanı)
Konak, İzmir
A 1932 bronze monument on Cumhuriyet Meydanı depicting Atatürk as an equestrian figure pointing to the sea.
Its story
Work on the monument began in 1929 by joint decision of the governor's office and the municipality; without holding a competition, it was commissioned directly from the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica. The bronze statue was made in Rome, and the pedestal was prepared by the architect Asım Kömürcü. Atatürk, in marshal's uniform and pointing to the sea with his right hand, symbolizes the moment the order 'Armies, your first objective is the Mediterranean' was given. Bronze reliefs on themes of the War of Independence and victory appear on three sides of the pedestal of dark red Afyon marble. The monument was unveiled in a ceremony on July 27, 1932 and is today the center of official ceremonies on Cumhuriyet Meydanı (Republic Square).
