Atarneus Ancient City
Dikili, İzmir
A city of Aeolis opposite Lesbos (Midilli), ruled by Hermias, where Aristotle lived for a time.
Its story
In the 4th century BC, under the rule of Hermias, Atarneus was the center of a territory stretching north as far as Assos. The philosopher Aristotle spent some time at Hermias's court and married his niece. In the Hellenistic period it became an important harbor under the Kingdom of Pergamon. The city is thought to have been abandoned after the 1st century AD; remains of walls and buildings can be seen on the hill.
