Its story
The bazaar was built in the 1660s as a source of revenue for the Yeni Cami (New Mosque) complex. Its name (literally 'Egyptian Bazaar') comes from interpretations linking it to taxes from Egypt in the Ottoman period or to goods brought from Egypt. Shops lining the long L-shaped corridor sell spices, coffee, lokum (Turkish delight), nuts and dried fruit, and medicinal herbs. The streets around the bazaar take in the lively trades of Eminönü and the narrow market lanes leading to the Rüstem Paşa Mosque.
