Its story
The lake is a lagoon formed when the front of a bay at the mouth of streams coming from the north was blocked by sand and gravel. It is connected to the Sea of Marmara by a narrow channel at its eastern end, so its water is slightly salty. It takes its name from the small hand-pulled rafts (çekmece) used to cross it before a bridge was built. Birdwatching is possible on its shores; around the lake are important archaeological sites such as the ancient city of Bathonea.
