Its story
The island takes its name from its reddish soil and rocks (kına means henna); known as Proti in the Byzantine period, it was used as a place of exile for those who fell from favor in the empire. In the 19th and 20th centuries it developed as a summer settlement of the Armenian community; the Church of Surp Krikor Lusavoriç is part of this heritage. It has less tree cover than the other islands, but its coastal walking paths and sea views are appealing. It is the first stop when going to the Princes' Islands by ferry.
